Recovering from a Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Recovery after a wisdom tooth extraction typically involves a few days of rest and attentive aftercare. In the first 24 hours, you may experience mild swelling, slight bleeding, and some discomfort. This is normal, as your body begins the healing process by forming a clot where the tooth was removed. Keeping gauze in place, resting, and avoiding strenuous activities will aid your initial recovery. In many cases, applying a cold compress to the cheek can help minimize swelling and reduce discomfort.
Over the next few days, soft foods such as soup, yogurt, and applesauce are your best bet, as they will keep pressure off the extraction site and let you eat without disturbing any clots. Try not to use a straw or spit forcefully, since that can inadvertently dislodge the clot and lead to a condition called dry socket. If your dentist has prescribed pain medications or antibiotics, follow the instructions closely for the best results. Maintaining good oral hygiene is important, but be gentle when rinsing and brushing near the extraction area.
It is common to notice gradual improvements in both comfort and chewing ability by day three or four. Should your pain or swelling increase instead of decrease, reach out to your dental provider for guidance. Everyone heals differently, and your health history can affect how quickly you recover. Oral rest is key, so try to keep talking and chewing to a minimum in the early stages.
Within a week or two, most of the swelling often subsides, and you can usually return to your normal diet and activities. During this period, continue to follow any personal instructions from your dentist—these might include rinsing with warm saltwater or avoiding contact sports. Checking back for a follow-up appointment will also help confirm that everything is healing as expected.
